What to prepare

for your Maternity photo session

Pregnancy is one of the most amazing, incredibly special, and beautiful moments in woman’s life. Knowing that you are nourishing and grow a tiny little human is nothing short of miracle.

I know sometimes you don’t feel the most comfortable in your skin while pregnant.. growing waistlines, the swelling, hormones running a muck. It’s okay. A maternity session is designed to celebrate and document the precious new life growing within. You will only be pregnant a few times (if that) in your entire life. No matter if you think you look far from glowing or glamourous, my job as a photographer is make you look and feel amazingly beautiful! I strive to capture these images in such an artistic way to draw out the beauty, love and femininity of pregnancy.

When to schedule

The best time to schedule is between 30-35 weeks. At this point you have a nice beautiful round bump, but aren’t too uncomfortable or puffy/swollen. Although I have photographed maternity sessions very close to the due date with beautiful results, I always advise clients to schedule during this timeframe when they are more likely to be feeling they’re best.

All family members are welcome! If siblings are coming please bring toys , snacks and maybe and extra helper for assistance.

What to wear

One of the most important components of a maternity session is what to wear! You will want to choose form fitting clothing that accentuate your beautiful belly. Most importantly choose something that is you, and you are comfortable in. Keep clothing selections for maternity portraits simple. Too many stripes and busy patterns can hide the stomach or detract attention away from it. Instead stick with solid and light colours. I absolutely love lace and sheer flowy dresses for maternity sessions. There is something very feminine about it and it photographs well.

Clothing suggestions

Strapless bras, tank tops with built in bras, button down sweaters or shirts, lingerie, boy shorts, full coverage undies, light dark and nude undies, skirts that sit below the waist, jeans that sit below the waist, scarfs, husbands work shirt, shawls, solid neutral colour clothing, dresses, jewellery.

Other ideas:

Ultrasound photos, baby booties or shoes, balloons, or any special momento you would like to includes in your photoshoot.

For men, I recommend solid or lightly patterned clothing and also try to coordinate their outfits with yours.

Day to pamper yourself!

Take the time to pamper yourself – make yourself feel relaxed and beautiful. Perhaps indulge in mani/pedi. Get your hair and make up done/ can be very simple every day wear make up and hair style. You deserve it! It’s your day to look and feel beautiful. The best photos are created when expectant mommas feel relaxed, confident and at ease.
